USGBC-NCC Silicon Valley Branch
Welcome to the USGBC-NCC Silicon Valley Branch!
Silicon Valley is at the heart and leading edge of the green building movement, with a unique combination of greentech smarts, venture capital, and an international community. Silicon Valley Branch (SVB) offers opportunities for networking and learning about the green building movement through educational events and classes that help you stay attuned to this rapidly and continually evolving sector of the economy.
My vision for 2010 is that we partner with our sister organizations in the building design, construction and operations world – such as AIA, ASHRAE, BIG, BOMA, IIDA, IFMA – to share training, information and have FUN!
- Ron Fong, Chair of the Silicon Valley Branch
- Monthly program meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of the month at
5:30pm, see schedule below for more details. EGB meetings for young professionals occur frequently, contact
Sean Falvey for more info or to get involved.
- To stay better connected with everything branch-related, join our online community group. Once you have registered for the online community, join the "Silicon Valley USGBC" group, under "Affinity Groups."
-
As always, volunteer opportunities are available! There's no better way to be involved than being a volunteer.

What does a designer or contractor need to know today as they plan
for upcoming projects given the plethora of green codes and standards?
Will CALGREEN Title 24 rule for California? Or will ASHRAE 189.1 take
over?
Learn about ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings, except Low-Rise Residential
and some of the differences it offers compared to CALGREEN Title 24.
This standard, co-developed by ASHRAE / USGBC, is intended for code
adoption and provides minimum requirements for high performance new
buildings and major renovations. The standard addresses energy
efficiency, water use efficiency, IEQ, materials and resources, and
more. It can lead to significant energy and water savings when compared
to current code-minimum buildings.
Come hear Kent Petersen, Chair of ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings,
share about what we can expect and should be planning for, and learn
about how these future green building code provisions could impact you.
Elizabeth Echols
will open the event and introduce Kent Peterson. Ms. Echols is Director
at USGBC-NCC and oversees public policy and social equity programs.
Tickets will be available at the door - $20 for USGBC-NCC Members, $35 for Non-Members, and $15 for EGB/Students.

- Learn about the USGBC LEED for Homes rating system
- Understand how LEED / Green Point Rated by Build It Green and CALGREEN Title
24 overlap and mesh or don't mesh together
LEED for Homes is a voluntary rating system that promotes the design and construction of
high-performance green homes, including affordable housing, mass-production homes,
custom designs, stand-alone single-family homes, duplexes and townhouses, suburban
and urban apartments and condominiums and lofts in historic buildings. The LEED rating
system has evolved along with green buildings. Cost and benefit are better understood as
metrics evolve and data becomes available. The Silicon Valley Branch will provide an
update on the LEED for Homes rating system. LEED for Homes is often compared to
LEED NC but it actually varies considerably in delivery, certification and soft costs
associated with certification. Additionally, a significant and growing opportunity exists in the
remodeling/retrofit markets; there are millions of existing homes in need of energy retrofits.
The USGBC has made a commitment to addressing this need and plans to roll out LEED
for Existing Homes. USGBC-NCC Green Residential
Building Advocate & Committee Chair
Michael Kloefkorn will share his extensive knowledge and experience with the USGBC and
LEED for Homes.
